Bibliotheca Bipontina

The Bibliotheca Bipontina is a scientific regional library in Zweibrücken , which has been part of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Library Center since September 1, 2004 . It is one of the most important libraries in the country.

The book holdings are around 120,600 volumes (as of 2012) , including 12,000 volumes from the old museum holdings from the princely libraries of the Zweibrücken dukes. It also keeps the libraries of the "Association for Palatinate Church History" (around 20,000 volumes) and the "Historisches Verein Zweibrücken" (around 10,000 volumes). The main focus is on regional literature in the Palatinate and on the humanities . In 2015, the founding holdings of the Bibliotheca Bipontina were included in the “Country Directory of Nationally Valuable Cultural Assets”.

history

While the libraries in Zweibrücken were almost completely destroyed by the war events of the 17th century, the library in Bischweiler of the Birkenfeld line , which was brought to the Zweibrücken Residence in the 18th century, was preserved. It was founded by Count Palatine Karl I von Pfalz-Birkenfeld (died 1600), Duke Wolfgang 's youngest son, and continuously expanded by his heirs. In his will, Count Palatine Karl made the maintenance and expansion of the library compulsory for his heirs and stipulated that "the library should be left at the Graffschäft Sponheim".

In the 18th century, intellectual life flourished in Zweibrücken, the printing press (the famous editions of Editiones Bipontinae were published here) and of course the library. The head of the library at that time was the grammar school rector Georg Christian Crollius , a well-known scholar.

Since the end of the 19th century, the Bipontina was assigned to the humanistic Herzog-Wolfgang-Gymnasium . After its dissolution, it became an independent state institution in 1988 and then integrated into a newly founded state library center in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2004.
