Karl I of Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld (born September 4, 1560 in Neuburg ; † December 16, 1600 in Birkenfeld ), Count Palatine near the Rhine , Duke in Bavaria , Count of Veldenz and Sponheim, was Count Palatine and Duke of Palatinate from 1569 -Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld .

Life

Karl was the fifth son of Duke and Count Palatine Wolfgang von Zweibrücken (1526–1569) from his marriage to Anna (1529–1591), daughter of Landgrave Philip I of Hesse .

Karl was considered learned, he had an important library built at Birkenfeld Castle , but also as staid. He had a commemorative coin minted for the birth of the Hereditary Prince. As the founder of the Wittelsbach line from Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld, he became the progenitor of the Bavarian royal family.

Karl died at Birkenfeld Castle and is buried in the Protestant castle church in Meisenheim . Since his sons were minors when he died, his brothers Philipp Ludwig and Johann took over the regency.

His son Christian made him one of the progenitors of the Bavarian kings . All Wittelsbachers living today are descended from Karl.
