Library of German homeland magazines

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The library of German homeland magazines has been located at the Central Geographic Library (GZB) at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL) in Leipzig since 2013 . The history of this literature collection goes back to 1991.

purpose

The IfL's decision to take over the library of German homeland magazines had two reasons:

The IfL is the only non-university research institute for geography in Germany. Basic research on the regional geography of Europe and on German regional studies is anchored in its statutes as a core task. This includes questions of regionalism , regional identity and home. With the library, the IfL creates an exceptional source of resources for its own and region-specific research.

The second reason is the federal library landscape in Germany. For the German-speaking area, the German National Library (DNB) at its locations in Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main has the right to deposit copies and collects all published media . Since the DNB is purely a reference library , its holdings are not available for loan. Regionally, almost 30 libraries have the right to deposit copies for the rooms assigned to them, often the federal states. This means that regional literature is collected locally at many locations.

With the takeover of the library of the German homeland magazines, the Central Geographic Library took on the task of collecting regional magazines centrally and thus enabling supraregional literature analyzes and research. After familiarization, all titles are available for use on site and via interlibrary loan.

history

At a symposium for editors and editors of home magazines in Bocholt in May 1991 , at the suggestion of the then head of the Bocholt city archive and head of the home newspapers working group in the German Heimatbund (since 1998 Bund Heimat und Umwelt in Deutschland, BHU) Hans-Detlef Oppel, it was decided to create a To found a library in which the local and regional journal literature should be collected centrally.

In 2001 the library had to leave Bocholt due to a lack of staff and space. She was then housed in Drachenburg Castle above Königswinter at the headquarters of the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation for Nature Conservation, Heritage and Culture .

Due to capacity reasons, it had to be relocated again in 2009. No suitable location could be found and so it was taken over by the State Home Association of Saxony-Anhalt , whose managing director Jörn Weinert made a private house in Zuchau near Barby available.

The IfL became aware of the unsatisfactory accommodation through information from library users and reached an agreement with the BHU to take over 25,000 individual fonts, which took place in 2013.

Duration

When the collection was taken over, it consisted of around 900 magazines and series. Since 2014, more than 2,700 editors have been asked to give their publications to the GBZ. Around 1200 magazines and series are received regularly.

The bibliography is sorted by federal state. Two further chapters deal with areas that are no longer part of German territory, including the former Prussian provinces and former German-speaking areas in the Czech Republic and Romania .

The writings deal with municipalities, districts and parts of municipalities, with the municipalities from Lower Saxony and Bavaria having the highest proportion. In the districts that are Saarland and North Rhine-Westphalia strongly represented. Home district communities and hometown communities are represented in the literature of the expellees. In addition, there are regional studies from the area of the former GDR as well as cross-regional publications on natural landscapes in Germany, in which mountain and hiking clubs have been active with their own magazines since the 19th century.

According to the compilation data facts literature on the geography of Europe, volume 13 , the library contained around 3375 independent publications as of September 30, 2018. We are constantly trying to close further gaps.
