Archivio storico del Patriarcato di Venezia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Archivio storico del Patriarcato di Venezia (Historical Archive of the Patriarchate of Venice) is located in one part of the seminary, Dorsoduro 1, after it was in a wing on the 3rd floor of the former Benedictine monastery of Santi Felice e Fortunato di Ammiana behind St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace on the other side of the Rio di Palazzo. It is part of the Archivi storici della chiesa di Venezia (Historical Archives of the Church of Venice).

The archives of the Patriarchate keep the files of the Curia of the Patriarch and other ecclesiastical institutions of the Patriarchate, such as those of the canteen , the chapter of San Pietro e San Marco and the seminary . There are also holdings such as those of the Primicerio di San Marco and the Antichi episcopati lagunari , i.e. the disappeared dioceses of the lagoon , as well as numerous community archives, archives of monasteries and brotherhoods . Finally, it also includes holdings that can be traced back to individual associations, priests or laypeople, and that have ended up in the archive. In total, the house comprises around 20,000 archival units.

It is therefore of great importance not only for the history of the patriarchy, but above all for that of the around 70 parishes in the historic center of Venice, but also for the islands in the lagoon .

The house has a library, and the modern section contains 3000 printed volumes and 60 periodicals, 20 of which are current. In the Sezione antica there are 6,000 printed works, the core of which covers the 16th to 20th centuries. The oldest manuscripts date from the 15th century. The inventory includes works on canonical studies , theology , homiletics , spirituality , but above all on Venetian history and music.

Holdings of the church's parish archives, many of which are in their own houses, can be ordered and viewed in the reading room of the house, which is only accessible from Monday to Thursday mornings. The Archivio diocesano diffuso project takes care of these scattered (diffuso) holdings .

In 1989, under the name Arca, an extensive security and documentation company for the patriarchate's holdings began under the management of the Patriarchate's Historical Archives as part of the state-sponsored Ecclesiae Venetae project . In addition to the ministry responsible for education and culture and the Veneto region , support came from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation and Save Venice Inc. in New York . It is also a joint project of the dioceses of Venice, Padua , Vicenza , Verona , Treviso and Vittorio Veneto .

The house offers advanced archival courses geared towards church collections.
