Santi Felice e Fortunato di Ammiana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Santi Felice e Fortunato di Ammiana was the name of a Benedictine monastery founded in 899 in Ammiana , a city in the northern lagoon of Venice . It was located near today's island of la Salina , where some place names, such as the palude di San Felice or the canale di San Felice, recall the monastery.

It was founded by monks from the Santo Stefano di Altino monastery, who had left Altinum while fleeing from Hungary and who carried out raids in northern Italy . In the sources, however, the monastery consecrated to Saints Felix and Fortunatus does not appear until 1074; According to legend, the two saints fell victim to the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian . The two brothers therefore lived in a hut in a forest near Aquileia because they preferred to have contact with wild animals than with the heathen. In the following decades the monastery received numerous donations, especially on the island of Sant'Erasmo . The monastery became the burial place for several doges, including Orso II Particiaco (912-932) in 932 . The Doge Pietro Badoer (939–942) is said to have been buried in the church of the monastery of San Felice di Ammiana.

In 1419 the monks left the monastery and went to Venice, and Ammiana also had to be abandoned due to increasing swamp. The city fell victim to the rising water level of the lagoon, silting up by the sediments of the Sile River and malaria . In 1472 Pope Sixtus IV abolished the monastery. The ruins of the monastery were still being marked on maps in the 16th century. The floods of 1966 destroyed many of the remains visible on the surface of the water.

The Archivio storico del Patriarcato di Venezia (Historical Archive of the Patriarchate of Venice) is located in a wing on the 3rd floor of the Benedictine monastery of Santi Felice e Fortunato di Ammiana, which has been relocated to Venice, behind St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace on the other side of the Rio di Palazzo.
