from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Lenhard Rudolph (born January 18, 1969 in Bremen ) is a German aging researcher , professor of molecular medicine at the Medical Faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and former scientific director of the Leibniz Institute for Aging Research (FLI) in Jena .

Life

After finishing school in Göttingen , Rudolph studied medicine at the Georg August University of Göttingen . He completed his medical studies in 1997 with a license to practice medicine . This was followed by clinical training in internal medicine and a two-and-a-half year research stay at Albert Einstein College in New York City and at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. In 2001 Rudolph returned to Germany and was - funded by the Emmy Noether Program and a Heisenberg professorship from the DFG  - research group leader at the Medical University of Hanover . During this time , Rudolph completed his habilitation in experimental gastroenterology . In 2007, Rudolph followed a call to Ulm University . There he was director of the Institute for Molecular Medicine and head of the Max Planck Research Group on Stem Cell Aging. From 2012 to 2017 he was the scientific director of the Leibniz Institute for Aging Research - Fritz Lipmann Institute e. V. (FLI) and Professor of Molecular Medicine at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, where he now researches and teaches.

From 2009 to 2014 Rudolph was President of the German Society for Aging Research (DGfA). From 2013 to 2017 he was co-speaker of the Leibniz Research Association (LFV) Healthy Aging.

In June 2017, the Presidium of the Leibniz Association reprimanded him for scientific misconduct. The board of trustees of the Institute for Aging Research decided to replace Rudolph in his function as scientific director [1], at the same time he was confirmed as head of the working group on stem cell aging to continue his scientific work at the FLI.

Research area

In his research, K. Lenhard Rudolph deals with the molecular mechanisms underlying the aging process, especially with stem cell aging. Adult stem cells are present in almost all human tissues and contribute fundamentally to the maintenance and regeneration of organs and tissues. In the course of the aging process, the function of these cells declines, which can lead to the loss of function of a number of organs and tissues. In his work, Rudolph clarifies the fundamental mechanisms that lead to the loss of function of stem cells during aging. In his most important works, Rudolph was able to show:

  1. Telomere dysfunction limits organ preservation, cellular stress responses and the life span in mice.
  2. Cell intrinsic DNA damage control points and cell extrinsic alterations inhibit stem cell function in response to telomere dysfunction and DNA damage.
  3. Epigenetic changes in gene expression reduce stem cell functions in the aging blood system and in skeletal muscle.
