Librarian-bibliographic classification
The library-bibliographic classification (BBK; Russian Библиотечно-библиографическая классификация, ББК ; translit. Bibliotečno-bibliografičeskaja klassifikacija ) is a classification for the organization of library systematic collections.
In addition to libraries in the Soviet Union, it was also used in the GDR , Czechoslovakia , Poland , Bulgaria and Vietnam .
General
The BBK is divided into 21 categories, each designated with a Cyrillic letter. In the case of the sub-categories, this is supplemented with digits based on the Universal Decimal Classification (UDK). The Marxism-Leninism has in the system of BBK a prominent position; the natural and social sciences are subordinate to it.
It also has a well-developed system of additional designations that apply to all categories and identify the type of document, the territory concerned, the language or ethnic term, the chronology of the document and general scientific terms. It allows the connection of two categories with the colon .
history
The BBK was drawn up on the basis of the UDK and had the aim of replacing it. The establishment of an editorial board was decided by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic in 1959, the first version was drawn up in 1960-68 and published in thirty volumes. 800 scholars and employees from the largest Soviet libraries worked on it. Special editions for public, oblast , children's and school libraries were also published later .
present
The BBK will be continued by the BBK Scientific Research Center at the Russian State Library . It is in use in numerous libraries in the former Eastern Bloc .
For economic reasons, there is no complete edition of the BBK in paper form; this would be too expensive. Abstracts (4 to 8 volumes) and one-volume work tables with corrections appear at irregular intervals.
The spread of the BBK is hindered by the unavailability of the complete tables in paper form. A free electronic version is also missing.
