The Big River (English for "big river") is a 40 km long tributary of the Cook Inlet in southwest Alaska .

The Big River has its origin in a small glacier-fed mountain lake in the Chigmit Mountains at an altitude of about 2,420  m . Initially it flows northeast. It flows through a series of smaller lakes known as Big River Lakes . After leaving the last and largest lake, the Big River flows in a south-easterly direction. The South Fork Big River empties on the right, a little later the North Fork Big River from the left. The Big River eventually flows into Redoubt Bay to the west of Cook Inlet. To the south of the estuary is Kalgin Island . On the opposite bank of the bay is the town of Kenai .

Tributaries

The North Fork Big River is a 27 miles long left tributary of the Big River. It has its origin in a glacial rim lake on the Lake Clark Pass at an altitude of about 328  m . The river flows in a wide right curve through the mountains. It takes in several glacier-fed tributaries. At the foot of the mountains, Bachatna Creek branches off to the left and flows over the Johnson Slough directly into the sea. In the lower reaches of the North Fork Big River splits into several river arms, all of which flow into the Big River.

The South Fork Big River is a 17 km long right tributary of the Big River. The river has its origin in the approx. 280  m high glacial rim lake of the Big River glacier tongue of the Double glacier . The South Fork Big River flows north along the base of the mountains. It splits into several arms of the river, all of which flow into the Big River.
