Big Water (formerly Glen Canyon City ) is a small town in Kane County of the US state Utah - about 410 km south of Salt Lake City and 330 km northeast of Las Vegas near the federal border with Arizona . The city is on US Highway 89 , a major route to and from the Grand Canyon .
The place was first settled in the 1950s as part of the work on Glen Canyon Dam in nearby Arizona . As a result, originally called "Glen Canyon City", the place was later renamed Big Water and officially registered under this name on December 29, 1983 as a municipality.
