Bijol Islands is a group of islands in the West African state of Gambia .

geography

The small uninhabited archipelago of Bijol Islands in the Atlantic Ocean are Gambia's only offshore islands . The group consisting of five islands is located about two and a half to three and a half kilometers off the coast at Bald Cape north of the village of Tanji in the Kombo South district . They form the westernmost territory of the Gambia. The small archipelago belongs to the Tanji Bird Reserve , established in 1993 , which is located on the mainland and includes the Tanji River with its mangrove forest on the banks.

The archipelago is the only known breeding ground for the great tern (Sterna caspia) , king tern (Sterna maxima) and gulls (Laridae) in Gambia. Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus) , Cameroon river dolphins (Sousa teuszii) and turtles (Testudinata) can be found in the water .
