The Tanji Bird Reserve (the area is also known as Karinti ) is a national park in the West African state of Gambia . It is located in the west on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the West Coast Region in the Kombo North district and was established in 1993. The sanctuary, which sees itself as a special bird sanctuary , includes the Tanji River and the Bijol Islands .

topography

The mouth of the small river is part of this national park with its 200 hectare mangrove forest on the bank and the lagoon on the Atlantic Ocean.

The small archipelago of Bijol Islands, which are the only sea islands in the state, is part of the bird sanctuary and numerous rare sea birds breed there.

Flora and fauna

The archipelago is the only known breeding ground for the great tern ( Sterna caspia ), king tern ( Sterna maxima ) and gulls (Laridae) in Gambia. Mediterranean monk seals ( Monachus monachus ), Cameroon river dolphins ( Sousa teuszii ) and turtles (Testudinata) can be found in the water .
