history
The original name of the place, which is still used by the locals, was Pasagan. Around 1844 the area was occupied by the Spaniards and the place was given its current name in July 1845 in honor of the Spanish Queen Isabella II . During the Spanish and later American occupation, Basilan was part of the Zamboanga province.
With the "Rep. Act 288 “a city named" Basilan City "was named on July 1, 1948 on the island of Basilan, which housed a total of 10 administrative communities. One of them was the Isabel Church. In 1937, Basilan was politically separated from the then large province of Zamboanga.
On December 11, 1975, the number of administrative parishes was reduced to 7, with the Isabela parish taking over both the city of Basilan City and the Malamawi parish.
In 2000 first efforts were made to transform the administrative community into a city. As of April 25, 2001, Isabela City has been an official city of the Philippines .
Although the residents of Basilan advocate membership of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) in recent referendums , residents of Isabela City continue to oppose such membership. For this reason, the city itself is officially part of the Zamboanga Peninsula District , established by Executive Order No. 36 of September 19, 2001.
