An educational institute for elementary education ( BAfEP ), called Educational Institute for Kindergarten Education ( BAKIP or KGP ) until August 2016 , is an institution for teaching kindergarten, after-school and early childhood education and part of the vocational school system (BMHS) or teacher and educator education system ( LBS) in Austria. The five-year training begins in the ninth grade and ends with a maturity and diploma examination ( Matura ). For holders of a school leaving certificate, the training can be completed as a four-semester college. There is also a college for working people, which lasts six semesters. Several BAfEPs offer courses in integrative pedagogy and early intervention as further training.

Renamed in 2016

The renaming to Bildungsanstalt für Elementarpädagogik came into effect on September 1, 2016, due to the Laws Amendment Act (Federal Law Gazette I / No. 56) of July 11, 2016. The additional training in early education has been an integral part of the curriculum for all BAfEP students since then.

Admission requirements and entrance examination

Before attending a BAfEP, an aptitude test must be taken. This includes musical aptitude, creativity, physical dexterity and resilience, as well as contact and communication skills. Another criterion for admission is the positive completion of the 8th grade.
