Bill Andrews (film architect)

William Charles Andrews (born July 21, 1901 in London , England , † July 28, 1986 in Chiltern , Buckinghamshire , England) was a British film architect .

Life

William "Bill" Andrews had attended two art schools in his hometown of London and then worked temporarily as an interior designer with his own company, designing the living spaces of Buckingham Palace .

Andrews made his first contacts with the cinema in 1932 through the film architect Alfred Junge , whom he was to assist in the 1930s. Andrews' career there he started as a draftsman at the production company Gaumont-British. There he developed into a leading designer of home-style entertainment in the 1940s and 1950s. Andrews 'most important designs were created for Herbert Wilcox ' dignified, plush social melodramas and images of time. Other important large-scale productions overseen by Andrews were the Anastasia biography with Ingrid Bergman and Stanley Kubrick's Lolita film adaptation.

At the age of 70, William Andrews retired into private life. He died a week after his 85th birthday in Buckinghamshire just outside London.
