William John "Bill" Archer (born June 15, 1880 in Heywood , † July 18, 1962 in Bury ) was an English football player .

Career

Archer played for Freetown FC , a club from Bury , before he was signed in July 1900 by the first division and reigning FA Cup winner FC Bury . Archer then played for the reserve team in the Lancashire Combination and was nominated in December 1900 in a selection team of the league for a comparison against the Birmingham & District League . In the first team of Bury, which again won the national cup in 1903, the role of left outer runner was occupied for a decade by George Ross , so Archer received few opportunities in the Football League. He made his debut on April 16, 1902 in a 3-0 away defeat against AFC Sunderland , which secured the championship by winning. Archer had to leave the field shortly before half-time after a clash with Matthew Ferguson and missed the entire second half due to injury. Barely a year later, he made his second and last appearance in a repeated 3-0 away defeat against Everton .

At the end of April 1904, he moved within the Lancashire Combination and was introduced as a new addition to Rossendale United , who replaced almost their entire team during the break of the season. In August 1907 Archer took part in an internal test match of Heywood United , a club in the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination, and appeared in league games during the season as a center runner . In addition to his footballing career, Archer was employed as a mechanic for a paper manufacturer.
