Bill Butler (film editor)

Bill Butler (* 1933 , † 4. June 2017 in Sherman Oaks , California ) was a British film editor .

Life

Butler first got into television in the 1950s, then into film. He had previously left school at the age of 16, worked in various professions and spent two years in the army. He worked in sound and editing and was assistant to Russell Lloyd for several years .

Butler began his independent work in sound editing in 1963. Towards the end of the decade he switched to film editing and was involved in around 50 film and television productions from 1967 to 2010. A director he worked with several times was Melvin Frank .

For his work on Uhrwerk Orange , Butler was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Editing in 1972 . He also received a nomination for the British Academy Film Award in 1973 . The film editor Ray Lovejoy had introduced him to director Stanley Kubrick , two weeks before the end of shooting he joined the production. Butler worked with the director for almost a year to finish editing the film .

Butler was married for around 60 years and had three children.
