action

In Boulder Creek , crook Charlie Malloy is caught cheating. Although he wants to return the poker money he has won , he is on the verge of being hanged . It's the Bloodworth gang who save him and help him escape. They want him to seduce the banker's wife from Dirtwater for them so he can steal the safe key and the gang rob the bank. The break-in is easy and the escape seems to have been successful, until one of Bloodworth's men notices that the sheriff is on to them. So Malloy is left behind and sought to escape with the booty. But Malloy has betrayed the gang itself by the 40,000 US dollars by horse droppings exchanged. With the money he now sets off to San Francisco , more precisely to the Barbary Coast district , where, accompanied by some women, he admires the Picadellie Pixies show . He especially likes lead singer Amanda "Bluebird" Quaid. But she resists his every attempt at flirtation. She doesn't like the whole city anymore, which is why she wants to leave. But just as she is haggling over the fare, she meets the wealthy Mormon Widdicombe from Salt Lake City , with all his wives and children. He is looking for an elegant lady from a good family to work for him as a governess .

This seems like the possibility for them to escape from misery. She's only missing $ 65 for new clothes. So she seduces Malloy in his hotel room, drugged him and stole his bag with the looted money. With this she buys new clothes and introduces herself as Duchess Swansbury and convinces Widdicombe to hire her as the new governess. For this she should leave for Salt Lake City. But Malloy, already on the run from Bloodworth's gang, pursues the carriage to Virginia City . Before the carriage gets there, they are attacked by the gang, so that they lose horses and coachmen. The car threatens to fall into the next ravine, which is why both jump off. Then they rush to Virginia City, where they want to release the suitcase from the carriage company's goods depot. Since the clerk wants $ 100, they have to find the money beforehand. Both try to pursue their rip-offs again. While she steals the money from a suitor, he tries to increase it in poker by cheating . But both fail, so they have to hide not only from the gang, but also from the law enforcement officers. With a stopover at the Horrowitz's Jewish wedding, the two end up in the wilderness, where they can barely save the money after a wild water ride in which they get closer to each other, only to then lose it to Bloodworth's gang.

Instead of killing the two, Bloodworth has them handcuffed in the desert. With a lot of effort they can free themselves again, but the money seems to be gone. Amanda doesn't care, Malloy feels closer, which she tries to show him. But he wants to offer her something, which is why he wants to get the money back with or without her help. Although she is disappointed that money is more important to him than she, she helps him nonetheless. They track down the hiding place for the gang, set the traps and create a distraction so that Malloy can blow up the box with some explosives and flee with his wallet. He is hit by a bullet and together with Amanda he can kill three bandits. The rest of them shoot him while trying to escape, so that he ends up badly wounded in the grass, while Amanda kills the rest of the people with her rifle. He thinks he is dying, even though he wanted to marry Amanda. Since the money still seems more important to him than her, he can only get up for the money and follow her.

criticism

"The film is a pleasant and amiable western comedy [where] Segal's comedy skills flourish under the director, while Hawn's talents are nicely presented."

"A largely impetuous western comedy with flat personalities, entertaining solely through the excellent leading actress Goldie Hawn."
