Bill Yancey
William Earl "Bill" Yancey (born July 30, 1933 in Kansas City , Missouri , † January 21, 2004 in Gresham , Illinois ) was an American bassist and tuba player of modern jazz .
Yancey studied for three years at the American Conservatory , first working with Sol Hicks in 1952/53 , from 1954 to 1956 with Jack McDuff , Ike Cole in 1958, John Merritt Young in 1959/61 and in 1961 with Eddie Harris ( Exodus to Jazz ). He then played in the backing band of the vocal ensemble Lambert, Hendricks & Bavan and recorded with Pony Poindexter . In 1963 he was part of the George Shearing band . In 1964 he accompanied Ella Fitzgerald on her European tour, with which he also recorded. In 1965 he worked in a club in Chicago ; In 1966 he played in the George "Stardust" Green Trio . He has also worked with Jack McDuff, Tony Bennett , Floyd McDaniel , Duke Ellington , Jim Sellers and, in recent years, with Gina Gibson.
