The Bindslev Gamle Elværk ( German Old power plant Bindslev ) is an electric power station in the Danish city Bindslev in the Municipality of Hjørring , North Jutland . It is the last DC power plant in Denmark.
history
In 1913 the idea of a power plant to generate electricity in the village was first born. In 1916, 26 citizens founded a cooperative to implement this idea. Since 1917, electricity has been generated in Bindslev with a diesel-powered generator. In 1919 the construction of the power station began to use the water from Uggerby Å to generate electricity. The plant was built between two closely adjacent loops of the river and started operations in 1920.
Bindslev Gamle Elværk is one of the few hydropower plants in Denmark. The electricity is generated with the water from Uggerby Å.
With the help of a dam, the river was dammed at a height of three meters in order to feed the water to the turbines via a canal . At the same time, a fish ladder was built in the fish-rich river .
The turbines lie horizontally in the turbine chamber. The turbine shafts lead to a gearbox in the engine room above. It increases the speed of the turbine for the generator. The generator generates direct current at this higher speed.
Since the E-Werk is water-powered, it was not affected by fuel rationing during the Second World War . However, the runoff from Uggerby Å limits electricity generation, as there is too little water to power the turbines during longer dry periods, as well as when the river freezes over in winter.
For many years the power plant was able to meet the electricity demand in the local area. However, after the demand for electricity from agriculture and local businesses increased, it was necessary to switch to a secure supply. The plant was shut down in 1968.
The energy crisis of the 1970s created an increasing interest in alternative energy sources such as wind and water power, solar energy and biogas . Therefore, the power plant was put back into operation on November 6, 1980.
The direct current generated here could not be fed directly into the power grid. So he was led by cable to the city's heating plant, where water was heated with the help of electricity. This was fed to the individual houses as district heating.
Due to the wear of the generator and turbines, operations were stopped again at the end of 1997. Since the power plant is the last water-powered DC power plant in Denmark, a group of volunteers began to repair the plant. On December 22, 2003 the larger of the two turbines was put into operation, and on June 19, 2004 the plant was officially inaugurated again.
Via an inverter , which converts the direct voltage into alternating voltage, and a transformer, production is fed into the public 10 kV network. The plant requires a lot of maintenance, so that maintenance personnel are temporarily on site all year round and the power plant can be visited with free entry.
