description

The rush loosestrife ( Lythrum junceum ) on Kefallinia (Greece)

Vegetative characteristics

The rush loosestrife is a bare, usually perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 70 centimeters. The stem is square, prostrate to ascending and branched at the base. The leaves are usually alternate and sessile. The lower leaves are obovate with a length of up to 2 centimeters and a width of about 1 centimeter, the upper ones are more or less sessile, increasingly narrower and linear.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from April to September. The hermaphrodite flowers are sixfold. Six broad, triangular, 1 millimeter long calyx teeth and six narrower intermediate teeth sit on a tubular axis cup with a red speckled base. In between there are six purple-violet, rarely white petals with a length of 5 to 7 millimeters. The twelve stamens are of different lengths, some protrude from the corolla. The ovary is on top. There are three types of flowers which differ in the length of the style ( heterostyly ). The capsule fruit is two-chambered.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 10.

Occurrence

The rush loosestrife occurs in the Mediterranean region and in south-western Europe . There are also some indications of inconsistent occurrence of rush loosestrife from southwest Bavaria.

It thrives in swamps, on river banks and on wet soils .
