Bint Jubail ( Arabic بنت جبيل Bint Jubail , DMG Bint Ǧubail , local Bınt ı Žbēl ; also as Bint Jbail , Bint Jbeil , Bint Dschbail or Bint Jubayl ) is the second largest city in the Nabatea Governorate in southern Lebanon . The city has an estimated population of 30,000. The exact population is unknown because Lebanon hasnot conducted an official census since 1932 . In 1978 the Israeli army invaded Lebanon and besides Tire occupiedsouthern Lebanon as far as the Litani River. Bint Jubail was also occupied. In 1982 Israel invaded Lebanon again and took part in the Lebanese civil war. The city was thenoccupiedby Israel between 1982 and 2000 . When Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000 after being there for 18 years, Hezbollah took control. The city is referred to by the Lebanese Hezbollah as the "capital of the liberated South" and by the Israelis as the "capital of Hezbollah". The city was thesite of repeated ground fighting between the Israeli army and Hezbollahduring the 2006 Lebanon War .

Some historians believe that the name of the city of Bint Jubail is derived from a Yemeni name. They argue that the name is associated with tribes from Yemen who came to the Levant centuries ago and came from Yemeni cities such as Djibla , Jabalan al-Ardaba and Jabalan ar-Raima . Other historians believe that the Phoenicians who founded Bint Jubail came from the northern Lebanese city of Byblos (Arabic Jubail ). Bint Jubail should be understood as the "daughter of Byblos".
