BioRegio initiative

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BioRegio Initiative was a funding initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) that ran from 1997 to 2005 to strengthen the use of biotechnology in Germany and to improve the economic implementation of the results from biotechnological research.

As part of the initiative, 25 regional associations of research institutions and companies were created nationwide under the name “BioRegion”. 17 of these regions participated in a competition in 1995 and 1996. In November 1996, the BioRegion Rhineland (later renamed “BioRiver”), the BioRegion Heidelberg (later renamed BioRegion Rhein-Neckar-Dreieck ) and the BioRegion Munich were selected as model regions. These were funded, together with the BioRegion Jena , which was also highlighted by a special vote , during the duration of the initiative from 1997 to 2005.

The total volume of the funding program was 90 million euros. According to the project sponsor Jülich , the initiative was successful in achieving its objectives.

The federal initiative “BioProfile” of the BMBF, which started in November 1999 and is endowed with 100 million  DM , followed on from the BioRegio initiative, with which a regional competition was advertised, but in contrast to the BioRegio initiative with thematically limited fields of biotechnology. From the original 30 applications, three regions were awarded, of which the Potsdam / Berlin region with its “Nutritional Diseases” profile with DM 35 million, the Braunschweig / Göttingen / Hanover region with its “Improved Diagnostics and Therapy” profile with DM 30 million and the Region Stuttgart / Neckar-Alb (later renamed BioRegio STERN ) with their focus on "regeneration biology" were also funded with 35 million DM.
