The Biogarten Prieros - information center for natural history, ecology and environmental protection - is a biological show and teaching garden in the Prieros district of the municipality of Heidesee , Brandenburg . He recreates typical biotopes of the Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park, shows possibilities of natural garden design and links these with educational offers for organic gardening.

history

Biogarten Prieros: imperial coat, admiral and big ox-eye on the blossom of the purple sun hat

The organic garden was initiated in 1994 as part of an ABM project on fallow meadow areas. The municipality of Prieros and the adult education center in König Wusterhausen acted as sponsors. The official opening took place one year later, in 1995, as a public exhibition and information garden.

The aim was to provide a teaching and educational offer on the subject of "organic gardening" in the form of a garden and through appropriate events. The target groups were primarily allotment gardeners, children and young people. Furthermore, families across generations came into focus.

The organic garden was continuously expanded and developed into an information center for natural history and environmental education. In the context of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development , a future workshop was initiated, which in 2008 dealt with the question of how the organic garden can be firmly anchored as an experiential educational environment for children, young people and adult gardeners and nature lovers. As a result, contacts were made to the Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences in order to find specialist staff who can convey content such as nature experience to multipliers such as educators in the pre-school sector. A stronger network with the Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park was also considered.

The sponsor is now a sponsoring association consisting of the association of the Dahme-Spreewald Garden and Settler Friends Association, the Dahme-Spreewald Adult Education Center and the Heidesee community. Since 2015 the horticultural management has been the permanent horticultural engineer Franz Heitzendorfer. The organic garden has an average of 5,000 visitors per year (as of 2013/14).

In June 2020, a new cooperation agreement was signed between the organizer of the organic garden, the municipality and the district, which includes significantly higher financial support. This is intended to secure a further conceptual development, to expand contacts to schools at the district level and to hold more educational and cultural events with the Dahme-Spreewald adult education center. The Deputy District Administrator and Head of Schools Dahme-Spreewalds, Susanne Rieckhof , sums up: “The district would like to equip the organic garden as a place of learning for the future. Environmental education is a prerequisite on the way to a sustainable society. "

The organic garden maintains u. a. on about 1 hectare a vegetable garden , orchards and flower meadows , a farm garden , a herb and apothecary garden as well as moor and wetland biotopes . Habitats such as ponds , bogs and heaths reflect the flora and fauna typical of the Dahme-Heidesee Nature Park and also show problems related to nature conservation issues.

The offer includes regular tours, information events and practical courses. The garden is aimed at schools and children's facilities with special events for children and young people.

The principle of the four-field economy is exemplified by the farmer's garden . Composting , hills , craters and raised bed support the ideological mediation, such as fruits and vegetables without chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides can be drawn. Seminars on the design of insect-friendly gardens are also part of the program, as are gardening according to the principles of permaculture , courses on pruning fruit and ornamental trees and information on the use of old cultivated plants. Organic garden products such as vegetables, fruit, herbs or honey can be purchased.

In the context of the Open Garden Days event , which is organized by the Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park and the Dahme-Spreewald Adult Education Center, the organic garden traditionally takes on the kick-off event under the motto “Culture meets nature”. In January 2017, this series of events was presented using the example of the organic garden at the appearance of the Dahme-Seen tourist association at the Green Week in Berlin.
