The Witten Biological Station is a biological station in Witten operated by the Witten Nature Conservation Group ( NaWit ) .

history

From 1972 onwards, there were non-association activities for nature conservation in Witten. For example, breeding grounds for jackdaws and kestrels in the rocks below the Hohenstein were secured and the expansion of the Muttenbach prevented. In November 1979 the non-profit association Naturschutzgruppe Witten e. V. founded. The aim of the association was to preserve biodiversity, protect native animals and plants and promote nature and environmental protection. The important nature conservation tasks of the first few years as an association included commenting on the draft of the Witten landscape plan and participating in the planning for the construction of the Kemnader reservoir . From 1979 until today, the creation and optimization of small bodies of water, the cutting of pollarded willows and the installation and control of nesting boxes, especially for the endangered owl species little owl and barn owl , have been part of the work program of the Witten nature conservation group and later the biological station. Protection activities and maintenance work on wet meadows, orchards and fallow areas were added in the following years.

Imberg playground

The former administration building of the Imberg quarry was taken over by the city of Witten after its operation and made available to the Witten nature conservation group in 1985 . The Witten Biological Station has now been set up in the building. From the nature conservation group Witten e. V. became the nature conservation group Witten - Biologische Station e. V. ( NaWit ). In 2005 NaWit was one of the founding members of the umbrella association of biological stations in North Rhine-Westphalia . The NaWit renovated with the help of funds from the city and country , the building and set up the office , a small lab , a library , a workshop and a showroom one. The former quarry was redesigned in 2006 as an adventure playground with a climbing park and mountain bike route.

tasks

The Witten Biological Station has the four tasks of nature conservation research, practical nature conservation, public relations , and landscape protection and the like. a. through statements in the event of interventions.

  • In the field of nature research, surveys of flora and fauna are carried out. Especially for the species groups bats, dragonflies, day butterflies, grasshoppers, birds, amphibians and reptiles. Systematic water bird censuses are carried out for the bird species group. Floristic and vegetation studies are carried out in protected areas, especially in nature reserves. Biotope mapping has been carried out in some protected areas. Monitoring of certain species is also carried out. For some years now, systematic source mapping and water investigations have been taking place in the urban area. Expert reports in the field of nature research are prepared on behalf of the authorities. The collected data is processed digitally. The data collected are incorporated into supraregional and nationwide distribution atlases and research work (e.g. amphibians, avifauna, dragonflies and flora).
  • Practical conservation work includes:
    • Creation and maintenance of small bodies of water
    • Toad protection measures during the spawning migration
    • Meadow mowing
    • Willow cut
    • Attaching nest boxes for bats, songbirds and owls
    • Care of native plant communities by removing neophytes (giant hogweed, glandular balsam)
    • Planting hedges
    • Care of old orchards
  • The Nawit district contact point of the State Association for Nature Conservation and Environment North Rhine-Westphalia is to stand up for the protection of nature and the environment . In this way, NaWit, as the body responsible for public matters, can issue statements during construction planning or important construction projects that affect nature or landscape protection. There is participation in environmental committees and advisory boards at various authorities. Several Nawit members work as volunteer landscape guards for the county administration. Other members are represented in the landscape advisory board at the Lower Landscape Authority in Schwelm.
  • The area of public relations includes natural history educational work and the presentation of local nature conservation problems and concerns in the media. The biological station offers adult education center courses , lectures and guided tours. Current reports from the daily nature conservation work as well as the event dates for the current year are published in an annual publication.
