The Sellessen biomass cogeneration plant was put into operation in 2006 in the Sellessen district of Spremberg , which was built as part of the relocation of Haidemühl .

Construction began in May 2005, the boiler was ignited for the first time on November 19, 2005 and the first mains connection on December 6, 2005. The official commissioning took place on April 13, 2006 in the presence of the then Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel .

linThe old place Haidemühl had to give way to the advancing opencast mine Welzow-Süd . From the properties made available for resettlement, the majority of the residents of Haidemühl chose the current property near Sellessen in Spremberg. Haidemühl is now part of the town of Spremberg .

The biomass cogeneration plant supplies the newly built Haidemühl with district heating and electricity. The power plant, built on the principle of combined heat and power , provides up to 3.5  MW of thermal power. The up to 2.8 MW electrical energy is fed into the existing line network of the local utility, Stadtwerke Spremberg, in accordance with the Renewable Energy Sources Act .

The fuel requirement is around 30,000 tons of wood chips per year. The biomass used from the clearing of the open pit is 100% above-ground wood from the previously cleared forests and the tree stumps and tree roots that were previously unusable . The use of root wood to generate electricity and heat is so far unique in Germany. The overall efficiency with full heat extraction is 52%.

Since October 1, 2011, operations have been managed by the “Gesellschaft für Montan- und Bautechnik mbH” (GMB), a subsidiary of Vattenfall Europe . At the beginning of 2016, GMB also became the owner , as Vattenfall Europe New Energy GmbH separated from the plant components in connection with the sale of the generation plants in Germany by Vattenfall Europe.
