Birdsey Renshaw
Birdsey Renshaw (born October 10, 1911 in Connecticut , † November 23, 1948 in Portland , Connecticut) was an American neuroscientist and the discoverer of the Renshaw cells named after him and the Renshaw inhibition .
Life
Renshaw was the son of Raemer Rex and Laura Birdsey Renshaw and had a younger sister, Raine. In 1936 he completed his medical studies at Harvard Medical School and received his doctorate in 1938 in Alexander Forbes' research group on the measurement of electrical potentials in the brain using microelectrodes . He then joined Herbert Gasser's research group at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research .
In 1938 he married Janet Card Hayes. and had two sons, Thomas Hayes Renshaw and Bruce Birdsey Renshaw .
He died of polio in 1948 after a short illness .
