period of service

The Birger Jarl in 1951 for the Swedish shipping company Rederi AB Svea to put Kiel and in 1953, together with its sister ships Aallotar and Bore III on the routes Stockholm - Helsinki - Stockholm and Turku used. The ship was named after the Swedish nobleman Birger Jarl . After twenty years in service, the ship was sold to the Finnish shipping company Jakob Lines in 1973 and used as a ferry. In 1976 it was to be renamed Minisea , but this was ultimately never implemented.

From 1976 to 1977 it served as a barge in the Oslofjord . After extensive renovation work in 1978, the ship was used for cruises between Stockholm and Mariehamn from 1979 . On May 31, 1979, it collided with a quay in Mariehamn, which sank several boats anchored there. In addition, the historic sailing ship Pommern was badly damaged in the accident.

In 1982 and 1988 the machine system was overhauled. This was followed by more years as a cruise ship. At the beginning of 2013 the Birger Jarl was decommissioned after 60 years of service due to financial problems of the shipping company. However, the shipping company refused to scrap the ship because of its high historical value. Since the summer of 2013, the Birger Jarl has been a hotel ship in the port of Stockholm under the name Ånedin Hostel .

The ship is classified as a historically valuable ship .
