From 1980 she studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, where she became a master class student in 1985 . Birgit Luxenburger is a member of the German Association of Artists . She lives and works as a freelance artist in the Rhine-Main area.

Works

Birgit Luxenburger works abstractly and colors play a major role in her works. She examines the possibilities of creating spatial depth from the surface solely through color tones and the superimposition of various layers of color. To do this, she first applies a primary layer to the painting ground, which is characterized by a raised, relief-like structure. This first layer largely determines the pattern and rhythm of the work. Above this, multiple layers are arranged linearly or concentrically. In this way, Birgit Luxenburger creates different impressions. Sometimes the color spaces seem to bulge towards the viewer, then again they disappear into the depths of the picture. It is not immediately apparent to the viewer whether the top, middle or bottom layers of paint are optically closest or farthest away.
In 1990, Birgit Luxenburger described her intention and her motivation as follows: "Until now, I was interested in color in its property of expansion, not only in its interaction with the neighboring color, but also in its expansion in the deep space. Repeated layering of transparent colors results in one Deep light, a glow on the background of the picture, which nonetheless remains an illusion on the surface. By superimposing liquid paint, the first layers influence each subsequent one. "
