Birch cottages

The Birkenhäuschen is a refuge at a lookout point on the south side of the Selketal above the district of Alexisbad in the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt, which belongs to the town of Harzgerode .

The house is located below the summit of the Habichtstein on Schlotheimplatz . From the house there is a view of the center of Alexisbad, located in the Selke valley. Not far from the hut leads the cliff path , over which the Selketalstieg is also led here . Starting at the birch house, a very steep serpentine path leads down to Alexisbad.

The refuge, built from birch trunks in a shape unusual for the region, was first built in this form by the Harz Club branch association Köthen in 1906 on the site of a previous building. The court painter Wilhelm von Kügelgen already described this place as a special vantage point in the first half of the 19th century . The birch house, along with the Schönsicht and the Köthener Hütte, is one of the vantage points over the Selke , which were created in connection with the health spa in Alexisbad in the sense of a landscape design in the form of romanticism . Since the first half of the 19th century, the birch house has been one of the most famous stops on the promenades around Harzgerode and was advertised in various travelogues from this time. The branch association Harzgerode has been responsible for the support since construction.
