The Birsköpfli (sometimes also called Birskopf ) is an area used as a local recreation zone in the Swiss city of Basel and the Birsfelden agglomeration . It is located directly at the mouth of the Birs in the Rhine .

Geographically, the Birsköpfli denotes the area in the Breite district bordered by the Birs and Rhine ; in the west it is bordered by the Black Forest Bridge and in the south by the autostrasse. On the banks of the Birs estuary there is a park with green meadows and a restaurant, the rest of the area is mostly populated by allotment gardens .

In general usage, the Birsköpfli also includes the green meadows in Birsfelden, which is located on the banks of the Rhine on the other side of the Birs in the immediate vicinity of the Birsköpfli. The parks are extremely popular with the population because of their proximity to the city, their attractive location on the Rhine and the wide range of leisure, recreation and sports facilities and are used very frequently by all walks of life in summer. The general night's sleep from 10 p.m. also applies to Birsköpfli, but quiet stays are possible and often occur on mild summer nights.

Birskopfsteg

The Birskopfsteg connects the two river meadows at the mouth of the Birs and was inaugurated in 1963 as the first cable-stayed bridge in Switzerland. On an asymmetrically arranged A-shaped pylon , the U-shaped concrete bridge trough hung on three pairs of steel wire meshes .

The bridge was only designed for pedestrians and since the Birsköpfli has developed into a frequented resort on both sides in recent years, the bridge should have been extensively renovated in 2007. On June 22, 2007, one of the six suspension cables tore, whereupon the bridge was closed and later demolished. A temporary wooden bridge with two truss was erected in April 2008. The construction work for a new pedestrian bridge began in July 2011 and in March 2012 the new bridge was opened to traffic. The cost of the 74-meter-long structure was CHF 2.4 million.
