Former bishop's palace in Lauterbourg

The former bishop's palace in Lauterbourg in Alsace was a residence of the Speyr bishops . The building is protected as an architectural monument ( Monument historique ).

The building was erected after the Lauterburg Castle was destroyed in 1716 by Bishop Heinrich Hartard von Rollingen . In 1738/39 the city of Lauterbourg built barracks in the neighborhood. In 1765 the building became the seat of the court of the Speyer administration, in 1770 the seat of an official cellar . After the French Revolution , the building was the home of the commandant from 1809 to 1870, which is where the name of the commandant's house comes from. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 there was a military hospital in the building, after which it came into the possession of the school administration. From 1874 on, the building housed a two-class preparation school . In 1938 the city of Lauterbourg acquired the former bishop's palace and its outbuildings. From 1940 to 1960 the facility was used to accommodate war-damaged families. The building has served as a schoolhouse since 1960.
