Schwäbisch Gmünd University Park (former Bismarck barracks , also Bismarck barracks ) is an area in the eastern part of Schwäbisch Gmünd . The building complex is proof of the importance of the Gmünd garrison, which was temporarily the third largest military base in Württemberg after Ulm and Ludwigsburg .

history

Use as barracks from 1911 to 1991

The Bismarck barracks was built between 1911 and 1914 on the then eastern outskirts. It was built for the 10th Württemberg Infantry Regiment No. 180 . From 1934 to 1937 the barracks was expanded significantly. It survived both the First and Second World War unscathed and was therefore initially used to accommodate displaced persons .

From 1951, the United States Army used the Bismarck barracks, which were further named as such. From 1964 the barracks served as the headquarters of the 56th Field Artillery Command, which was responsible for the Pershing II missiles on the nearby Mutlanger Heide , among other things , as a result of the NATO double resolution from 1983 . In 1991 the US troops withdrew and the seven hectare site of the Bismarck Barracks was acquired by the city.

There was a district military replacement office on the site , which was closed in 2014 as a result of the personnel reduction in the Bundeswehr.

Use after 1991

Various institutions have settled on the site. From 1992 to 2002 it was mainly used by a University of Maryland College . This had to close in 2002 due to financial difficulties. The area owes the current name University Park to this use .

The state grammar school for gifted Schwäbisch Gmünd of the state of Baden-Württemberg has been located there since 2004 . Various conversions were carried out for this purpose, for example boarding school buildings and a new sports hall built. There is also a location for the Kolping Foundation and the VHS Schwäbisch Gmünd.

The history of the site has also been illuminated by the state high school in the campus museum located here since 2012.
