The Bismarck Tower is a Bismarck monument in the Dresden town of Cossebaude in the shape of a fire altar .

history

Since the founding of the German Empire in 1871 , fires have been kindled in honor of Otto von Bismarck at many striking landscape points. For this purpose, Bismarck towers and columns with fire bowls were often built.

In 1913, such a monument was to be built in Cossebaude and the then beautification association commissioned the architect Rudolf Kolbe from Loschwitz with the design. On March 30, 1913, the foundation stone was laid on the Lord dome and solstice celebration on 22 June of the same year, the fire altar was consecrated.

Syenite from the Cossebauder quarries on Talstrasse and shell limestone concrete were used as building materials . The builder Säurich from Cossebaude took over the execution, the costs amounted to around 10,000  gold marks .

On the west side of the square (3.20 m × 3.20 m) and 4.50 m high altar was a bust of Bismarck by the sculptor Richard König from Radebeul , above it the coat of arms of those of Bismarck and on the opposite side a plaque of honor with the following inscription :

"Our unforgettable Bismarck was set up in 1913 as a permanent memory. The committee for the establishment of a Bismarck honor on the Herrenkuppe in Cossebaude."

This was probably changed in 1924 to:

"Dedicated to our unforgettable Prince Bismarck by the Beautification Association Cossebaude and the surrounding area in 1913"

The bust and inscription were removed in 1945.

After a renovation in 1999, the fire altar was used again for solstice celebrations until 2008. In 2013, structural damage was repaired again and the fire bowl was removed without replacement, so that the structural function of the fire altar was abandoned. A Bismarck bust with name and dates of life was probably added during the latter renovation.
