Bisoro is a town in the Mwaro Province (formerly Muramvya ) in Burundi , Central Africa. The place is located on a highland at about 1900 m altitude, slightly south of the equator and extends over an area of about 180 km².

Situation and opinion poll

The approximately 42,000 inhabitants live fairly evenly distributed over 15 hills, as the families (an average of ten people) each settled on their private agricultural parcels. Between 2500 and 3500 people live per hill. Each hill has a name and can be understood as a part of Bisoro.

The hills ("sub-locations") are called:

  • Buhabwa
  • Buburu
  • Guitaramuka
  • Kanka
  • Kariba
  • Kiganda
  • Kirika
  • Kivoga
  • Mabaya
  • Masango
  • Mashunzi
  • Musumba
  • Munanira
  • Nyabisiga
  • Rubamvye

There is practically no concentration of settlements (main town).

50% of the population of Bisoro are Hutu , 50% are Tutsi . Both groups live in peaceful coexistence in this region.

economy

The people live mainly from their self-produced agricultural products. The climatic conditions allow the cultivation of tea and coffee, bananas, wheat, potatoes and sweet potatoes. The average income is 10 € / month.

education

48% of the population in Burundi and thus probably also in Bisoro are children between the ages of 0 and 14 years. Primary school students are taught in classes with 50 to 110 students. In Bisoro there are currently 12 primary schools on the hills, which have been modernized or newly built with the help of German partners, as well as three industrial schools and an agricultural high school. In addition, a small adult education center and three health centers were built.

In 2015, a vocational school with a boarding school was inaugurated, where plumbers are trained. Local specialists are trained here to set up and maintain the drinking water network for the hills. In order to transport the drinking water to the higher settlements, hydraulic rams are used, which are driven by the running water energy of the streams.

The construction measures were financed by NGO funds from the German federal government as well as donations from the sponsored cities of Albstadt and Chambéry , and were carried out by the residents of Bisoro. Thanks to German help and the commitment of AACOBI (Association of Friends and Inhabitants of Bisoro), Bisoro has become a model for development in the education sector in Burundi. The most recently built schools were therefore inaugurated by the Vice President or the President of the State of Burundi.

Almost 70% of adults are illiterate and without adequate arithmetic, reading and writing skills in the professional and health sectors cannot successfully receive further training. In order to generally improve people's chances in life in the long term ( life expectancy in Burundi on average 53 years), considerable investments in education are necessary. Women were denied school attendance in the 1990s, so the illiteracy rate among women is almost 100%. In 2007 a literacy campaign for adult women was initiated, which is financed by donations from the sponsor city of Albstadt and funds from the state of Baden-Württemberg. By 2014 4500 women and 240 men had completed the literacy courses with a certificate.

Sponsored cities

Bisoro is joint sponsor town of the cities of Albstadt in Baden-Württemberg and Chambéry in France .
