Bitburger Gutland
The Bitburger Gutland is a landscape in the southern Eifel in the far west of Rhineland-Palatinate . The area of the region is approx. 585 km².
geography
The Bitburger Gutland extends around Bitburg and the rivers Kyll , Prüm and Sauer . It stretches from Kyllburg in the north to the Moselle in the south and from the German-Luxembourg border in the west to the Salm in the east.
geology
The Bitburger Gutland is a wide and undulating plateau roofing south with deeply cut stream valleys in north-south direction. The edges of the plateau are strongly fissured by the tributaries of the Kyll , Nims and Sauer . The soils consist mainly of limestone , Letten and marls of the shell limestone and the Keuper , as well as sandstone in peripheral areas. The fertile soils are used intensively for agriculture. In the Bitburger Gutland, limestone and clay was also mined to a significant extent in Roman times .
climate
The region has a significantly milder climate than the Schnee Eifel to the north and is influenced by the favorable wine-growing climate of the Moselle.
vegetation
The plateaus and valley floors are poorly forested and used as arable land, the valley floors are often grassland. Only the steep slopes are mostly planted with deciduous forests.
