The Björnert Cliffs are a series of icy cliffs on the Hobbs coast of Marie Byrd Land in West Antarctica . They rise along the north side of McDonald Heights between the Hanessian Foreland and the Hagey Ridge , and drop abruptly from the summit at 800 m to a height of 400 m at the base.
Aerial photos of the formations were taken during the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941). The United States Geological Survey carried out a mapping between 1959 and 1965 using its own survey data and aerial photographs of the United States Navy . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the cliffs in 1974 after Rolf P. Björnert, employee of the polar program of the US National Science Foundation , who worked as a project manager for the research stations in the Antarctic.
