The Blüchermuseum Kaub is a museum sponsored by the city of Kaub am Rhein , which honors the Prussian General Field Marshal von Blücher , who distinguished himself in the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon . The museum is housed in a cultural monument of the city, the former inn “Zur Stadt Mannheim”, a baroque building erected in 1780 , in which at that time Blücher's headquarters was when he crossed the Rhine.

Rhine crossing

Under Blücher's command , around 50,000 soldiers, 15,000 horses and 182 pieces of artillery from the Silesian Army von Kaub crossed the Rhine on New Year's Eve of 1814 (vanguard in Nachen) and within just five days from January 2nd on a pontoon bridge and pushed forward the Napoleonic troops, weakened after the Battle of Leipzig , continued to retreat on their advance .

museum

The museum is dedicating a large tin figure - diorama - to this crossing of the Rhine . The event is also presented comprehensively with contemporary memorabilia, pictures and display boards. The collection of militaria is of European importance.

The rooms used by Blücher at that time with their historical furniture, canvas wallpapers and tiled stoves have been preserved practically unchanged. At that time Blücher used the private rooms of the Külp (Kilp) family, who owned the Gasthof Stadt Mannheim.

The museum was set up in the front building of the former inn for the centenary of the Rhine crossing in 1913 on the initiative of the great Blücher admirer Werner Teschemacher from Bad Ems , who also contributed exhibits.

estate

Commerce Johann Daniel Kilp had the inn Mannheim erected in 1780 as an elegant, consisting of 11 axes baroque palace of the Palatine court architect Franz Wilhelm Rabaliatti , a student of Alessandro Galli da Bibiena . It was supplemented in 1792 by a horseshoe-shaped courtyard, which was partly built into the slate rock. Storage rooms, storage rooms and horse stables were built there. Mainly boatmen who had to wait to pass the customs station on the Kauber Pfalz stayed overnight in the inn .
