Black Guerrilla Family

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Black Guerrilla Family (also known as the Black Family or Black Vanguard ) is an American prison and street gang founded in 1966 by George Jackson and WL Nolen during their imprisonment in San Quentin . The gang is made up of African Americans and has 100 to 300 full members and around 50,000 ordinary members.

Philosophy and goals

Inspired by Marcus Garvey , the Black Guerrilla Family has been characterized as a black, Marxist - revolutionary organization that is recruited from prisoners. It was founded with the aim of eradicating racism , preserving the dignity of prisoners and overthrowing the United States government.

Symbols

The Black Guerrilla Family uses two different motifs as symbols, for example for tattoos . The first are crossed sabers , machetes , rifles and shotguns with the letters or numbers BGF or 2.7.6 . The second motif is a black dragon .

Allies and enemies

The Black Guerrilla Family was or is allied with several left-wing groups, including the Black Liberation Army , the Symbionese Liberation Army and the Weathermen . Other allies are the Crips and the Gangster Disciples . The BGF is hostile to the Aryan Brotherhood , the Mexican Mafia and the Texas Syndicate .

Attempted murder of Fay Stender

In 1979, former Black Guerrilla Family attorney Fay Stender was shot down with six bullets. The shooter was Edward Glenn Brooks, a recently paroled BGF member who cited Stender's cheating on George Jackson as the reason for his act. Brooks forced Stender to make a "confession" before shooting her. Stender said: I, Fay Stender, admit I betrayed George Jackson and the prison movement when they needed me most ("I, Fay Stender, confess that I betrayed George Jackson and the prison society when they needed me most .") Stender remained paralyzed below the waist and persisted in pain from the attack. She died in Hong Kong by suicide shortly after she had testified against Brooks.

The murder of Huey P. Newton

On August 22, 1989, the co-founder and leader of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense , Huey P. Newton , was shot dead by Tyrone Robinson on the 1400 block on 9th Street in West Oakland . The 24-year-old was a member of the Black Guerrilla Family. Relations between Newton and factions within the Black Guerrilla Family had been strained for nearly two decades. Former Black Panthers who joined the Black Guerilla Family in prison were disappointed in Newton because of the alleged lack of support for imprisoned Black Panthers. There were also allegations of an alleged murder within the Black Panthers against Newton. In his book Shadow of the Panther , Hugh Pearson claims that Newton was addicted to cracks and that he blackmailed local BGF dealers to get drugs for free. This brought him the hostility of the Black Guerilla Family.

Tyrone Robinson was sentenced to 32 years in prison for the August 1991 murder.
