Blackburn

Blackburn is a district of the Australian city of Melbourne and is located between Box Hill and Nunawading just 20 km east of the city center. It belongs to the Whitehorse City administrative area . The district is named after one of its first settlers , the designer of the Yan Yan water reservoir near Melbourne, James Blackburn , who at that time had settled south of the small town on Blackburn Creek .

history

A first hotel was built in 1861 for travelers and gold diggers , a second followed in 1865. More than 10 years later (1876) the first post office was opened and in 1882 the railway line between Box Hill and Lilydale was inaugurated. The real development of Blackburn began with the railroad.

Through the brokerage of the “ Freehold Investment and Banking Company ”, a number of farmers settled. The community center ( Public Hall ) was built in 1888 with the help of this company and in 1889 Blackburn Creek was dammed into a lake.

The Methodist Church was consecrated in 1888, followed by the consecration of the first Anglican Church in 1890 . The primary school was opened in 1889. The most important branches of industry were and are agriculture , fruit growing and orchid cultivation .

Blackburn had to census ( Census ) in 1911, exactly 1,158 residents and 2,616 residents in 1933. In 2016 lived 13,940 people in the district.
