Blackstar was a British hard rock band. With singer and bassist Jeff Walker , drummer Ken Owen and guitarist Carlo Regardas, three of the four founding members were active in the recently dissolved band Carcass ; the fourth founding member, Mark Griffith, is a retired Cathedral guitarist.
The band released only one album with Barbed Wire Soul (early September 1997). According to Intro magazine , “Influences from the late seventies and early eighties [...] merged into a blend [...] that was still inspiring in the nineties.” Blackstar would have fished for “self-discovery in familiar waters , [on] the boiling of old Carcass or Cathedral recipes ”but waived. Metal.de emphasized the use of wind instruments such as trumpet, horn and saxophone as “loosening up” and providing variety . In the music magazine Rock Hard , the album was certified as having an "original-refreshing, contemporary-aggressive sound", in which the "usual crude vocals [and] the numerous effective grooves" ensured a high recognition value.
In the spring of 1999, drummer Ken Owen suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and fell into a coma for ten months. There have been no further publications since then.
