The colutea ( Colutea ) are a genus in the subfamily of the Pea family (Faboideae) within the family of legumes (Fabaceae). The genus includes 26 species .
description
Bubble shrubs are deciduous shrubs or small trees . Some species have thorns. The alternate leaves are pinnate unpaired. The opposite leaflets are entire.
The racemose inflorescences contain small bracts . The zygomorphic flowers are five-fold. The five sepals are fused. Of the five calyx teeth, the two upper ones are slightly shorter. The petals are pale yellow to orange in color. Nine of the ten stamens have grown together. The stalked ovary contains many ovules . The curved stylus ends in a large scar . Characteristic for this genus are the bubble-like, paper-like legumes . They contain a lot of seeds .
distribution
Most of the representatives of this genus are native to West and Central Asia. A few have their original range in China , the Mediterranean region and North Africa .
The best known species of this genus is the fast-growing bladder shrub ( Colutea arborescens ), which is occasionally planted as an ornamental shrub.
