Blasius Berwart (* 1530 ; † 1589 ) was a German builder . He enjoyed a special reputation in the construction of stairs and fortresses , such as the Wülzburg fortress .

Life

Berwart worked with his brother Martin Berwart († 1564) on the fountain in Leonberg in 1553/54 . As a student of Aberlin Tretsch , he was involved in the construction of Hohentübingen Castle and the Old Stuttgart Castle from 1557 . In 1558 he was sent to Dillingen Castle on the Danube to (from 1560) build the spiral staircase in Stuttgart Castle based on his model . In 1563 he entered the service of Margrave Georg Friedrich I with Tretsch in Ansbach . He worked on an extension of the Ansbach residence and on the completion of the Plassenburg . In 1571 he took over the construction management of the Deutschmeisterschloss Mergentheim .

The margrave sent him to the Duchy of Prussia in 1578/79 . He was supposed to convert the official building and take over the construction management on the west wing of the Königsberg castle . The round tower on the north-west corner of the castle, which was preserved until 1945, was named after him. In 1584 he led the renovation of the order castle in Mohrungen .

In 1586 he was called back to Ansbach, where, in addition to building palaces, he developed an extensive activity in the construction of town houses . His son Blasius Berwart the Elder worked during fortification work on the Wülzburg (1588) . J. with.

Berwart played a key role in the design of the German Renaissance palace . He and his brother were sought-after designers of spiral staircases that combined Gothic and Renaissance elements.

He was buried on July 23, 1589 in the Martinskirche in Oberhochstatt .
