The blue stone

The Blue Stone is a boulder near the village of Krahne in the municipality of Kloster Lehnin in the west of Brandenburg .

description

During the last glacial period , the Vistula glacial period , the Zauche formed the main ice edge of the Brandenburg phase , the maximum extent of the inland ice. Numerous rocks, so-called boulders, were transported with the glacier ice advancing from Scandinavia . After the ice had melted, they remained in the area of the terminal moraines , for example .

Such boulders were often the only available rock formations in the Brandenburg area that could be used to extract building material. Some of them were used in toto for the construction of stone churches or in larger formations as quarries .

The blue stone is located on the Zauche plateau about two kilometers east or south-east of the center of Krahne in a pine forest . Much of the stone is in the sandy subsoil. It was dug up to a height of about 1.5 meters, but the majority of it is still not exposed. The exposed perimeter is about 12 meters. However, since the stone was used as a quarry in earlier times, it has lost a large part of its substance and size. The traces of the blasts are clearly visible. The usually smooth surface for boulders no longer exists.

The stone appears in a noticeable bluish-green color. This coloring is due to the dark components of the hornblende . This hornblende typically contains minerally bound iron , calcium , magnesium and aluminum .

The path to the Blue Stone is signposted from the village as a hiking trail . The striking boulder is designated as a natural monument .

Trivia

According to a local legend, giants used to live in the area behind the Krahner Busch . When they noticed that people were settling in the area of the village of Krahne, they are said to have thrown the blue stone to destroy the village. However, the target was clearly missed and the big stone landed off in the forest.
