history

The Swedish ball bearing factories (SKF) have their German headquarters in Schweinfurt. Under the aegis of the General Director of the German SKF, the Swede Gunnar Wester , SKF experienced its greatest boom in Schweinfurt, with up to 12,000 employees in the 1960s - far more than at the main plant in Gothenburg . Wester also demonstrated this strength of the Schweinfurt SKF with buildings (see: Schweinfurt, Profanbauten ). He had the blue skyscraper built in the color of the SKF logo with company apartments. The first groundbreaking took place on July 20, 1962 and in September 1964 the first tenants moved in. When it was completed in 1964, the 73 m high blue skyscraper was 5 m higher than the tallest skyscraper in Frankfurt am Main to be completed , the Zurich House . The blue skyscraper was also the tallest residential building in Germany in 1964, until a few years later the Langen Johann in Erlangen exceeded it by two storeys.

The original company apartments in the Blue Tower were converted into owner-occupied apartments at the end of 1982 under the management of Sparkasse Schweinfurt .
