Badacsony wine region

Kéknyelű , German and Kéknyelû is a very old Hungarian white wine . It is probably a very old, autochthonous variety from the Badacsony region. The previously assumed close relationship to the Italian Picolit Bianco was not confirmed by comparing the DNA profiles.

The vine is exclusively female, so double-sex vines have to be planted between them to ensure pollination. In the past these were mainly those from the old Hungarian white wine grape Budai zöld , which has become very rare today, today it is mostly hybrids between Budai zöld and Kéknyelű, which are called Rózsakő .

The rather small, golden-green, mostly brown-spotted berries form small, loose-berried grapes, which are very susceptible to trickling, especially in very hot summers. The variety sprouts relatively early, so it is very susceptible to late frosts, but ripens very late. Both the yield and the quality of the berries are subject to very large annual fluctuations. In general, the vine places very high demands on the winemaker, both in terms of cultivation and in terms of the development of the wines, which is probably the main reason for the sharp decline in this quality grape.

It used to be widespread in Hungary, but is now only cultivated in the Balaton area , where it produces excellent, classy and nuanced wines with a good shelf life, especially in the region around Badacsony, which some experts consider to be the best dry white wines in Hungary become. They are pale green, with up to 13.5% by volume, quite strong in alcohol and have a pronounced acid structure.
