List of grape varieties

The white wine variety Picolit Bianco is an autochthonous variety from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region , Italy . It was already grown in the Roman Empire. The name is derived from piccolo, how small , since the berries are very small. It is probably identical or at least related to the Blaustengler (Hungarian Kéknyelü) cultivated in Hungary . The previously widespread variety has a strong tendency to trickle and delivers rather low yields, so that it almost died out in the meantime and was only re-selected and promoted in the 19th century. Picolit Bianco is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ).

The Picolit Bianco results in very rare and expensive dessert wines with the name Picolit. The alcohol-rich wines are made in the Denominazione di origine controllata - Colli Orientali del Friuli region and were extremely popular in the 18th century. Antonio Zanon (1767) wrote that Picolit was served in the courts of Germany, England and France.
