The blue-cheeked bearded bird ( Megalaima asiatica , syn .: Psilopogon asiaticus ) is a 23 centimeter member of the family of the Asian bearded birds (Megalaimidae).

Appearance

The bird has dark green dorsal plumage, the belly and tail are colored light green. The head, which is mostly light blue, is particularly noticeable. The forehead, the base of the neck and the upper part of the head are reddish. Above the eye, the birds have three wide and black stripes. The legs are brown, the beak light brown and the front tip of the upper half of the beak is black.

habitat

The habitat of the blue-cheeked bearded bird extends from northern India to Southeast Asia. There, this species inhabits mixed forests in the Himalayas , lowlands and gardens in human settlements.

Way of life

The very sociable birds often sing together in small groups. They eat fruits, especially figs , but also larger insects as food . Little is known about the courtship of the birds except that the males follow the females in flight.

Reproduction

During the breeding season, these birds build cave nests in trees, which are enlarged over the years. The young are completely naked and blind when they hatch and are cared for by both parent birds. After the young birds have fledged, they are driven out of the territory by their parents and the adult birds begin a second brood shortly afterwards.

The IUCN lists this species because of its wide distribution in the category ( Least Concern ) not endangered.

Subspecies

Three subspecies are recognized:

  • Megalaima asiatica asiatica ( Latham , 1790). The nominate form occurs from northeast Pakistan to western and northern Myanmar and southwest Yunnan .
  • Megalaima asiatica davisoni Hume , 1877. This subspecies is distributed from south-east Myanmar to south-east Yunnan and northern Indochina .
  • Megalaima asiatica chersonesus ( Chasen & Kloss , 1927). This subspecies is native to the south of Thailand .
