Blaverism is an ideology of the Valencian community that arose during the transition in Spain . The most important characteristic of Blaverism is the resistance to Joan Fuster's book Nosaltres, els valencians ( German  We, the Valencians ) from 1962. This book provided an important impetus for the idea of the Països Catalans ( German  Catalan countries ), to which Valencia belongs . The Blaverists consider Fuster's ideas to be an imperialist Catalan nationalist movement that tries to put Valencia under Catalan rule.

The name Blaverism is derived from the blue color of the flag of the Region of Valencia.

The sense of the word "Blaverism" is usually negatively charged due to the willingness to use violence and the right-wing extremist views of the Blaverists. At the beginning the supporters of this movement were very different, it was a populist movement with a mixture of regionalism and the " Fuero ", the traditional Valencian legal system. The most widespread support for Blaverism was in the city of Valencia and its surroundings.

Development of Blaverism

Reaction against Fuster

Blaverism is usually seen as a reaction against the ideas of Joan Fuster in his 1962 essay Nosaltres, els valencians . By and large, Fuster's view is that Valencians and Catalans are of the same nationality. With these words this idea can be summed up:

"No és que la bandera valenciana siga igual que la catalana. És la mateixa. Igual que amb la llengua i tantes altres coses. "

“It is not that the Valencian flag and the Catalan flag are alike. They are the same. It's the same with language and so many other things. "

- Joan Fuster, El blau en la senyera , Valencia, editions 3 u. 4, 1977, p. 26.

Blaverism not only denies the theses of a common nationality (flag, language, culture, etc.), but also promotes symbols of a different Valencian nationality. In that sense it could be called nationalism , when in fact many of its supporters were late Franquists .

On September 11th, two bombs exploded in Fuster's house. They caused great damage to his library and archive. Fuster survived the attack, seriously injured. No one was arrested, but it is believed that it was some kind of violent response by the Blaverists to Fuster's cultural and political ideas.

Blaveristic traits

The main characteristic of Blaverism is resistance to Catalanism.

Flag of the autonomous community

Name of the autonomous community

At the beginning of the democratic transition, almost all political parties (including the right-wing ) agreed to the designation País Valencià (Valencian land).

The Blaverist view, however, took into account that the name País Valencià meant that the Valencian region was part of the Països Catalans , which displeased the Blaverists. After the disputes of 1979 and 1980, the Blaverists gradually preferred the name Regne de València ( Kingdom of Valencia ).
