Block House is a Hamburg- based restaurant chain that was founded in 1968 and specializes in steaks . The group was set up by the Hamburg restaurateur Eugen Block with the support of his sister Marlies Head based on the example of American steak houses.
Company history
The first Block House opened on September 26, 1968. The location of the restaurant is still today in Dorotheenstrasse in Hamburg-Winterhude . 1972 the establishment of the company's own butcher shop followed . In 1978 the own, centrally organized menu production followed (Block Menu GmbH), which was relocated to Zarrentin am Schaalsee in 1994 . The original Block House Restaurantbetriebe GmbH was converted into a stock corporation in 1992 .
The Hotel Elysee in Hamburg-Rotherbaum , which belongs to the Block Group , opened on August 24, 1985. After a two-year expansion, the hotel has been operating as the Grand Elysée since 2006 .
In 1996 restaurants began to open abroad. The first Block House outside of Germany opened in Malaga in 1996 . Block House Franchisebetriebe GmbH , which is responsible for international activities, also runs other restaurants on Mallorca , Marbella , Lisbon and Vienna .
Jim Block
The Jim Block brand was created in 1973 to utilize the meat cuts from steak production. The main product of the Jim Block brand are hamburgers . The patties for the burgers are made in the same butcher shop that supplies the meat to the Block House restaurants.
The range of Jim Block restaurants comprises (as of 2014) twelve different types of burger; a specialty is the preparation of the burgers in front of the guests. Jim Block's total sales in the same year were 10 million euros. In 2017 Jim Block counted over 2 million guests and sold over 2 million burgers.
Jim Block is a better burger restaurant chain with locations in Hamburg, Berlin and Hanover. The chain has been in Hanover since June 2012 and in the Bikini House in Berlin since April 2014 . The chain currently has 12 restaurants and employs over 260 people.

Block House operates a total of 53 restaurants across Europe, 42 of them in Germany. The Block House with the highest turnover in Berlin is the branch on Alexanderplatz ; In 2010, sales there amounted to 3.5 million euros net; the group's average turnover in 2010 was 2.7 million euros.
The Block Group's total turnover in 2017 was around 380 million euros, and the company has over 2,600 employees (as of August 2020). The group of companies includes three stock corporations and 17 companies that are run as a GmbH .
