Bloodsucking Freaks is a splatter film from Troma that was released in 1976 in the USA . The director of the film is Joel M. Reed. The original was the film The Wizard of Gore (1970) by Herschell Gordon Lewis .
action
In a small theater in New York, the magician Sardu offers his audience a very special stage show. The stage show features episodes in which young women are mutilated or tortured to death . Most visitors appreciate the first-class “special effects”, which actually aren't, the show evokes rejection from a well-known critic, who also visits the show. Sardu then kidnaps both him and the well-known Broadway ballet dancer Natasha. Both should become the new stars in one of his future shows. Just as Sardu has already broken the will of some naked women who he keeps imprisoned in a cage in the basement in order to turn them into cannibals, he also tries to break the will of the critic with the help of psychological and physical torture . Natasha, however, is "brainwashed" using hypnosis to make it appear as if she wants to participate in his show of her own free will. However, this does not convince Natasha's boyfriend, so he mobilizes the corrupt police to uncover the illegal activities of Sardu and to free his girlfriend.
reception
The Internet Movie Database has a rating of 4.8 / 10. At Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a rating of 29% and a user rating of 46%.
"[...] from today's point of view not to be recommended to everyone, even if the torture marathon is loosened up again and again with very successful gags. [...] for example darts. The target, however, is an appropriately painted woman's bottom. Or the use at a backgammon evening is not gaming chips or even cash, no, you are playing for the fingers of women [...] It is therefore hardly surprising that the film brought women's rights activists on the barricades at the time "
“Joel M. Reed, socially critical Bloodsucking Freaks, is a vehement statement for more women's rights and can be clearly placed in a feminist context. In disturbing scenes, the woman is depicted as an oppressed being, dominated by lascivious and perverse male fantasies, which were materialized in the most extreme in the figure of Sardu. But the chains of this oppression are finally broken and in a highly tense climax the woman is liberated by her tormentors. "
“The atmosphere is dirty and depressing. People who can do something with black humor will find fun in this work. At Gore you get something worth seeing for the film painter. [...] For me a small masterpiece away from the mainstream. "
“The real charm lies in the interaction between Master Sardu and his little henchman Ralphus. The scenes with them together, whether at backgammon or darts, are great and the more you watch them, how insolent, relentless and carefree they are, the more fun it is. "
"A 22-year-old film that enjoys cult status in the USA because of its sadisms and scenes of torture, but whose gleefully celebrated atrocities do not speak for its makers."
